Man pleads guilty to forcing woman to work as prostitute

A Toledo-based pimp who was apprehended in Tipp City while holding a woman against her will for purposes of sex trafficking pleaded guilty on Monday to two felony charges.
Rodney Brown, 33, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio to being a felon in possession of a firearm and violating the Mann Act, a law used to combat forced prostitution, said Mike Tobin, spokesman for the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio.
Brown, who will be sentenced in May, faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.
Last April, Brown was arrested by Tipp City police following a traffic stop on Interstate 75. Police found that Brown was holding 20-year-old Michigan resident Selma Hasanovic against her will and was taking her to Indianapolis to force her to have sex with strangers for money.

A bill introduced in June, 2011, would require those under age 18 who are picked up in prostitution stings be treated as victims, not criminals.
Known as the Safe Harbor Act, the proposed legislation also would require the dissemination of information about human trafficking resources in an attempt to help those trapped in the sex trade.
Ms. Fedor said the bill is being studied and reviewed.
She noted the goal is to address the issue using a “victim-centered approach.”
Comparing it to the evolution of laws against domestic violence, Ms. Fedor said state legislators must not only address the criminality of the perpetrators but the needs of the victims.

Gun violence in metropolitan Toledo is out of control. But solutions are highly complicated and will take years to implement.
This year, there were more than 120 shootings in Toledo between early June and mid-November, despite a police crackdown over the summer that resulted in 891 arrests and 36 gun seizures between June 28 and Sept. 1.
Although the total number of slayings in Toledo isn’t far off from previous years, more have involved guns. The gun-homicide rate in 2011 might surpass the 2007 record of 77 percent.
The problem is not confined to seedy neighborhoods inhabited by drug dealers, prostitutes, pimps, and thieves, nor will it go away on its own. Budgetary crisis or not, city leaders must confront this issue with urgency and resolve.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) – The niece of a woman accused of keeping four mentally disabled adults locked in a filthy Philadelphia basement said Tuesday that her aunt had forced her into prostitution.
Testifying at a preliminary hearing, 20-year-old Beatrice Weston also recounted physical abuse and taunting at the hands of her aunt Linda Ann Weston and Weston’s adult daughter, Jean McIntosh.
Beatrice told the court she was forced to have sex with men her aunt brought home when they lived in Texas. She said one of the four adults who authorities say were imprisoned by Weston in the basement also was forced into prostitution.
“She would make us do it at the same time,” Beatrice said of McIntosh, adding that the money was given to Weston.

Jamie Lynn Bishop, 37, 573 Yondota St., Toledo, was charged with promoting prostitution, solicitation, and possession of marijuana. Brenda Wells, 43, 113 Oak St., Toledo, was charged with solicitation.
Ms. Bishop appeared by video arraignment in Bowling Green Municipal Court on Thursday. She requested a continuance to consult an attorney and will be back in court on Dec. 21, according to court records.

Wood County Sheriff Sgt. Terry James declined to say which motel the operation was conducted at, but said authorities had received complaints of prostitution in that area.
“We’re trying to keep the prostitutes out of Wood County,” the sergeant said.

Five persons, including two East Toledo women, have been arrested on charges of solicitation and promoting prostitution after detectives from the Wood County Sheriff’s Department conducted a vice operation Wednesday at a North Baltimore hotel.
According to the sheriff’s department, charges of solicitation have been filed against three men:

A hearing for her case is scheduled for Dec. 28 in municipal court.
Both women were incarcerated as of last week, according to the sheriff’s department.
