SYLVANIA, Ohio (WUPW) – The Sisters of St. Francis of Sylvania hosted an event Wednesday to teach people how to respond to victims and try to break the chain of human trafficking in greater Toledo.
“We see it in the strip clubs, they’re all around the city, ethnic restaurants, massage parlors, nail parlors,” said Sister Mary Kuhlman of the Sisters of St. Francis of Tiffin.
An organization made up of four Toledo area women’s religious communities gathered at the Sylvania Franciscan Village to learn how to respond when they come into contact with victims of human trafficking.
“It’s just atrocious that it’s happening and we sisters, especially and I hope everybody else is dedicated to the dignity of each person, we are always fighting for the rights of people that their dignity is upheld and they’re treated with respect,” said Sister Kuhlman.

But that source of income ended four years ago, Mr. Struve said, when the city condemned the living spaces. Despite the club’s exterior renovation in 2004, the apartments were considered not up to building codes in 2007. Without enough funds to refurbish the apartments, the club has relied on membership fees and renting out the office to pay for the property.
But the club lost its office tenant in June. Whole Self filed a 30-day notice with the Deaf Club at the end of June and began moving its belongings on July 6, Whole Self founder Connie Schepflin said.
“With the apartments closing they were still able to maintain their head above water. But when the massage parlor gave its 30-day notice, that was the kiss of death,” said Denny Seger, a member of the Deaf Club.

Phone taps revealed that he had also given private council documents to the owner of the bath house, backdated documents to protect other developers from fines, and told them to underestimate construction costs to pay lower fees. A Monroe County man who once operated a prostitution ring out of a massage parlor in the Lehigh Valley is facing theft charges for allegedly taking $4,280 for home remodeling work never started in the Poconos.
The Monroe County district attorney’s office charged Dallas R. Vavra, 58, Pocono Lake, with two counts each of theft and theft by deception for allegedly accepting two checks totaling $4,280 from a Hamilton Township woman in 2008. Vavra was operating as AAA-plus Roofing, but arrest documents say the business is not registered in Pennsylvania.

The prostitution charges stem from a 1984 arrest and conviction in Northampton County on two counts of promoting prostitution at the former Close Encounters massage parlor he operated on Airport Road in East Allen Township. The club provided what Vavra advertised as a “European total body massage,” and authorities called prostitution. At the time, Vavra lived in Bear Creek Township, Luzerne County.

The crime would apply to people who “recruit, lure, entice, solicit, isolate, harbor, transport, provide, obtain, or maintain” a person, or attempt to do so, with the knowledge or reason to believe that the victim will be subjected to “involuntary servitude,” prostitution, or pornography.
Sen. Tim Grendell (R., Chesterland), chairman of the Senate Judiciary-Criminal Justice Committee, has joined Ms. Fedor as joint sponsor. He plans to usher the bill quickly through his committee and hopes to get it to Gov. Ted Strickland’s desk before the legislature’s summer recess.
“In my district in Geauga County, there were two massage parlors,” he said. “I believe they were brothels. They finally did close down, but they found several women who were victims of human trafficking. I am really surprised at the cases of suburban girls who are victims of human trafficking.”

Canada: A group of women get together to assist human trafficking victims in Ontario. Naomi Baker created an organization to assist victims on nationwide.
Idaho: A woman faces jail time for prostituting her daughter over craigslist. According to the report, she was charged with aiding and abetting sexual abuse of her daughter on Wednesday morning, this week.
EUROPE
Estonia: Two men were charged for forcing a disabled woman into prostitution. They kept the woman in an apartment and sold her to more than a hundred men in three weeks.

One might expect that two-mile stretch to be a haven for adult establishments — liquor stores, pawnshops, topless bars and massage parlors — but the road is instead lined with a series of family-friendly businesses. There is a 4-H fairgrounds; churches; a preschool; the usual McDonald’s and Burger King presence; chain hotels such as Holiday Inn Express; and a few gas station/convenience store choices.
There are no signs on the highway pointing to the Lawrenceburg Hollywood Casino, which is 15 minutes from downtown Cincinnati. There are no billboards promoting prizes or entertainment. When the rolling neon of the Hollywood appears on the left, it flashes the faces of patrons who won large jackpots, interspersed with images of celebrity entertainers appearing at the casino; on Oct. 2, that lineup included karaoke versions of Tina Turner, Cyndi Lauper and Frank Sinatra.

Wagner said other than the occasional “degenerate gambler,” there has not been a major crime problem. He said there was a prostitution bust at a downtown massage parlor earlier this year, but “it was mainly townies worried about their names coming out.”

LAS VEGAS — A Las Vegas Valley massage parlor is taking a hands-on approach to giving back and fighting breast cancer.
Massage Envy is hosting Massage for the Cure. All eight of their locations are participating on Tuesday and are offering discounted one-hour massages of $35. Massage Envy said it is donating $10 from every massage to Las Vegas local Susan G. Koman for the Cure.
Breast cancer survivors said they are even taking advantage of the healing touch the deal offers.
Massage Envy clinics across the country are participating in the nationwide event and said they hope to earn $500,000 for Susan G. Koman for the Cure.
