Initially, it was a one-man community improvement project, but neighbors have noticed and are dressing up their properties.
“It’s wonderful. People have started caring about their neighborhood,” said Rachel Vasquez, who lives with her husband, Andrew, and children, 7-month-old Jack and 2-year-old Vida, in a nearby apartment. “People love to come outside now and now they have something beautiful to look at.”
Recently, Ocheske carefully ironed out creases in just-purchased American flags before he posted the colors along neighborhood streets. On the Fourth of July, at least 50 flags flew from new display holders in the neighborhood, he said.
Neighbors said prostitutes no longer walk streets in the area and gang members have stopped tagging signs with graffiti.
