Federal officials estimate up to 18,000 women and girls are trafficked for sex in the U.S. each year. Another 300,000, many of them girls as young as 11, are considered vulnerable.
A Dispatch examination of sex trafficking published last month confirmed that it is a growing, vastly underreported problem. It not only affects inner cities but also reaches affluent suburbs.
The Toledo area has been pinpointed nationally for a large number of trafficking cases. However, a larger number of calls to a national human-trafficking hot line came from Columbus.
Trafficking can involve prostitutes on the streets, in clubs, escort services, Latino brothels and Asian massage parlors.
