Ms. Johnson was brought to the hospital after being found in a central-city alley. She died at St. Vincent four days later and never regained consciousness, authorities said.
Her husband is charged in her death. Johnson, 42, of 2030 Ashland Ave., Apt. 610, is charged with two alternate counts of murder and faces up to life in prison if convicted.
During the testimony of two nurses yesterday, jurors were told of marks found on Ms. Johnson’s neck and of portions of a handkerchief found wrapped around the back part of her neck. A Lucas County deputy coroner later testified Ms. Johnson died of complications because of strangulation.
Also taking the stand were residents from the area near Bancroft and Fulton streets where Ms. Johnson’s body was found. Known in the area as a likely prostitute, Ms. Johnson had been seen that day with a man later identified as Johnson.
