… Jimmy: There used to be one of the biggest black hospitals here that employed black doctors and black nurses and saw black patients. But when (Tuskegee University president Dr. Benjamin F.) Payton came into office, we lost it. Too many people were getting their bills two to three years after their service and nobody was getting paid.
How is the drug epidemic affecting Tuskegee?
•Nicole: I haven’t seen any drugs first-hand, but I’ve only been here for a semester and the drug epidemic is something that I always hear about.
•Jimmy: I had nine crack houses on this street when I first moved into this house. Prostitutes walking all up and down the street, but I couldn’t live like that. But once I took the initiative to get these people off my street, you find no more crack houses or anything of the like on this street anymore.
