An entirely different type of quintessential American art is featured at the American Sign Museum, where owner-curator Tod Swormstedt has assembled a funky collection of hundreds of roadside signs from yesteryear. From fancy gold-leaf glass to “chaser” light bulbs to flashing neon, Swormstedt’s nostalgic signs – many of them very familiar and very big – will bring a smile to anyone’s face.
Just across the Ohio River in the little town of Newport, Ky., visitors can get an eye-opening and entertaining look at what’s been described as the “prototype for Las Vegas.” On the “Newport Gangsters, Gamblers & Girls” historical walking tour, guides dressed like mobsters lead visitors on an eight-block stroll, spinning colorful yarns – which they swear are true – and pointing out buildings that once housed casinos, strip clubs, speakeasies, and brothels. The tours, which are an absolute hoot, start and end, fittingly, at Gangsters Dueling Piano Bar.
